Researching your Past

PLACES YOU MAY NEED TO VISIT OR CONTACT

Your local library

Many library services now offer two things which will be of great value to you: access to the internet, and their own collections of material for family and local history. You may not find these at a branch library, but you should at the central library.

To find out what sources are available near you, you need to access a service on the internet called Familia (http://www.familia.org.uk). This is a directory of family history resources held in public libraries in the UK and Ireland. Each library has provided information on whether they hold any of the following:

  • Registrar General's indexes to births, marriages and deaths from 1837 (England and Wales).
  • From 1855 (Scotland).
  • Parish registers 16thto 20th centuries.
  • International Genealogical Index census returns 1841 to 1891.
  • Directories 18th to 20th centuries electoral registers and poll books.
  • 18th to 20th centuries unpublished indexes newspapers periodicals photographs
